CD Projekt Red has officially announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered for the Nintendo Switch 2, locked in for release on September 29, 2026. Designed as the definitive portable edition of Geralt of Rivia’s legendary journey, this release brings major upgrades across visual fidelity, performance stability, and core gameplay mechanics.
The package is available for pre-purchase on Nintendo Switch 2 and includes both critically acclaimed expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. In a massive win for player goodwill, CD Projekt Red confirmed that anyone who already owns The Witcher 3 on Nintendo Switch (digitally or physically) will be able to claim the Remastered edition on Switch 2 completely free when it launches.
Modernizing a Generation-Defining RPG
The Remastered release updates the expansive Northern Kingdoms to take full advantage of the Switch 2 hardware architecture. Players step back into the boots of Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster hunter for hire navigating a war-torn continent to track down his adopted daughter, Ciri, before the spectral Wild Hunt captures her world-altering power:
Tactical Monster Hunting: Master professional monster-slaying combat using an arsenal of upgradeable silver and steel weaponry, mutating alchemical potions, and Witcher signs.
A Living, Reactive Continent: Hunt across open plains, mountain passes, and crowded city back alleys, tracking beasts ranging from savage aerial predators to urban stalkers.
Moral Ambiguity and Deep Systems: Navigate morally gray questlines involving treacherous royalty and devious witches, reinvesting contract bounties into custom armor, horse racing, fist fighting, and Gwent.
The 2027 Expansion: "Songs of the Past"
Alongside the Switch 2 release, CD Projekt Red announced Songs of the Past, a brand-new full-fledged third expansion arriving in 2027.
Developed in partnership with Fool’s Theory (a studio composed of veteran The Witcher 3 developers), this expansion sends the White Wolf on an entirely new adventure to the seemingly tranquil realm of Letten, where dark secrets wait below the surface. Songs of the Past acts as Geralt's final narrative chapter before players take to the Path as Ciri in the upcoming The Witcher 4.
Takeaway
Offering a zero-cost upgrade path for existing physical and digital owners while simultaneously expanding an eleven-year-old single-player RPG with new narrative content is the gold standard for consumer-first publishing! It rewards long-term player investment and establishes the Switch 2 edition as an essential stop ahead of The Witcher 4.
